A fun and effective strategy used to support early communication is modeling exclamatory words and environmental sounds.

These sounds are short, playful, and easy to imitate. Many children say these types of words before they’re able to say more complex ones. They’re often full of early-developing sounds, a mix of vowels, and simple syllables—making them the perfect building blocks for language.

What Are Exclamatory Words and Environmental Sounds?

Exclamatory words are expressive sounds we use to react to something exciting, surprising, or funny—like:

  • “Uh oh!”

  • “Wow!”

  • “Yay!”

  • “Oh no!”

  • “Woah!”

Environmental sounds are sounds that represent things in the world around us—like:

  • “Beep beep” (for a car)

  • “Moo” (for a cow)

  • “Ahh-choo!” (for a pretend sneeze)

These words are fun to say, easy to pair with actions and expressions, and often come naturally in your daily routines.

Why Are These Sounds So Helpful for Language Development?

They’re Simple, Repetitive, and Engaging

These sounds are often some of the first that children try to copy because they’re easy to say and fun to use!

They Include Gestures, Facial Expressions, and Emotions

When you say “uh oh!” or “yay!”, your face and body naturally match the feeling—and that helps your child understand what you mean.

They Lay the Groundwork for More Complex Language

By making communication feel playful and rewarding, these early sounds motivate your child to interact. That interaction is the foundation for future words and sentences!

Let’s Look at Some Real-Life Examples

Here are a few ways to naturally include exclamatory words and environmental sounds in your daily routines:

During Play:

  • Driving toy cars: “Zoom!” “Beep beep!” “Wee-ooo!” (siren)

  • Playing with animals: “Moo,” “Oink,” “Woof,” “Meow”

  • Pretend play with dolls: “Aww,” “Ahh-choo!”

  • Building and knocking down blocks: “Boom!” “Uh oh!”

  • When your child shows you something cool: “Wow!” “Ooo!”

During Mealtime or Snack Time:

  • Enjoying tasty food: “Mmmm!”

  • Eating something crunchy: “Crunch, crunch!”

  • When something is too hot: “Ow!” or blowing “Huh huh”

During Bedtime Routine:

  • Whispering softly: “Shhh…”

  • Showing affection: “Aww,” “Mwuah!” (for kisses)

Remember:

These little sounds are powerful tools that support your child’s language journey. By reacting with playful sounds and expressions during everyday moments, you’re encouraging your child to engage, respond, and eventually talk.

Keep it fun. Keep it simple. And most importantly, keep connecting.
